PLASTICS

Plastic is a very common packaging material

It is lightweight

It can be easily moulded by using heat (THERMO PLASTICS) and pressure (Injection moulded, Blow moulded and Vacuum formed, Extruded)

It is available in lots of colours

They are self finishing (they don't need a surface finish eg, paint/varnish)

You need to know the main types and what they are used for.

PLASTIC PROPERTIES

Some plastics are used for certain PROPERTIES (characteristics)

 For Example:

 PET

Is stiff and tough, making it excellent for fizzy drinks as it can hold the pressure of the bubbles inside

Is very resistant to high temperatures (up to 120o making it great for use in an oven.)

LDPE, HDPE & PET

Can withstand extreme cold temperatures and are used for frozen foods.

PP, PS & PVC

Commonly used for chilled (fridge stored) foods.
