COLOUR THEORY

You must know basic colour theory for the exam.

·
All colours originate from the three PRIMARY COLOURS
                                    Red     Blue      Yellow

·
A colour that is made from mixing two primary colours together is called a SECONDARY COLOUR

Red+Blue         Blue+Yellow           Yellow+Red

= Purple                = Green                    = Orange

·
A colour that is made from a mixture of primary and secondary        colours together is called a TERTIARY COLOUR

Green+Blue        Orange+Yellow       Purple+Red

= Turquoise          = Tangerine          = Fuschia Pink

·
A COLOUR WHEEL  helps designers to choose colours to use in their designs.

·
Colours that are next to each other on the wheel, for example Pink & Purple, are in HARMONY

·
Colours that are opposite each other are CONTRASTING or           COMPLIMENTARY colours, for example Blue & Orange.

TASK: Colour Theory

 1.  Copy the colour wheel to the left, colouring all segments so that you know which colours correspond to each other.

2.  Give and example of a tertiary colour

3.  Give two examples of colours that are complimentary

TASK: Colour Association

Colour Association is how humans relate certain colours to things.

Colours can affect our emotions and feelings. Colours such as red warn us of danger, while blue can be calming.

Colours can also represent cultural ideas to some people. For example, green is a holy colour for Muslims.

Complete all the spider diagrams below, adding as many feelings, emotions and colour assosiations as possible for each colour (try to think of some connected to your theme of Children's Parties).

RED has already been started for you.
